The short version
Mawqut collects no data. There is no account, no server, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app makes no network requests of its own. Everything you do in Mawqut stays on your iPhone, and deleting the app deletes it.
Your location is optional. If you allow it, Mawqut uses it on your iPhone to calculate prayer times and the qibla, and never sends it anywhere. You can choose your city from a built-in list instead.
The only time Mawqut talks to anything outside your iPhone is when you buy or restore Mawqut+, and that goes to Apple through the App Store, not to us. Salah Lock uses Apple's Screen Time, which gives Mawqut sealed tokens for the apps you choose, never their names or how you use them.
Our App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected. This policy explains what that means in practice.
Who we are
Mawqut is made and operated by ELAQ Limited (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the Mawqut app for iPhone, its widgets and extensions, and this website, mawqut.app. For anything about privacy, write to hello@mawqut.app.
What stays on your device
Mawqut keeps the following on your iPhone so the app can work. None of it is sent to us or to anyone else:
- your location or chosen city, its time zone, and the prayer times calculated from it;
- your prayer settings: calculation method, madhab, high-latitude rule, per-prayer adjustments, Hijri date offset, adhan and reminder choices;
- your prayer log: which prayers you logged as on time, late or made up (qada), your streaks and your qada balance;
- days you mark as excused or travelling. These are private: they appear only in the app's log screen and are never shown anywhere else;
- Salah Lock settings (which prayers are locked, unlock rules, window length, snoozes and emergency unlocks used);
- bookmarks, your last-read position in the Qur'an, saved ayat, hifz decks and their review schedule, and reflection journal entries;
- challenge progress, such as the Ramadan khatm plan, and your dhikr counts;
- how you respond to cards in the ayah feed (save, share, skip, time spent), kept as on-device scores so the feed can learn what helps you. This is not a log sent anywhere.
This lives in Mawqut's private storage on your iPhone and in an App Group, group.com.elaq.mawqut, that only Mawqut and its own widgets and Screen Time extensions can read. Both are protected by iOS like any other app's data.
The whole Qur'an (the Arabic text and Pickthall's English translation) and the list of cities are built into the app, so reading, searching, choosing a city and calculating times never need a connection. English read-aloud uses Apple's built-in speech on your iPhone.
If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, Apple's backup may include Mawqut's data, as it does for most apps. That backup is handled by Apple under your Apple Account; we have no access to it.
To erase everything, delete Mawqut. iOS removes the app's storage and the App Group data with it. Removing a widget does not erase data; deleting the app does.
Location
Location is optional. When you set up Mawqut, “Use my location” and “Choose a city” are offered side by side. If you choose a city, Mawqut never asks for your location at all, and you can switch between the two at any time in the app's settings.
If you allow location, Mawqut uses it only on your iPhone, to:
- calculate prayer times, sunrise, suhoor and iftar for where you are;
- calculate the qibla bearing to the Kaaba;
- suggest a default calculation method and madhab for your country;
- notice when you have travelled more than about 30 km or changed time zone, so the times can be recalculated.
Your location is never sent anywhere: not to us, not to a server, not to any third party. Mawqut has no server and makes no network calls. Approximate location is enough, and Mawqut keeps the last good position so it does not need to keep asking. It asks only for location while you are using the app.
The city list comes from GeoNames and is stored in the app; searching it happens on your iPhone. The compass on the qibla screen uses your iPhone's heading sensor on the device.
Location on iPhone is provided by Apple's Location Services, which may use GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile network information under Apple's own privacy policy. You can change or remove Mawqut's access at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Mawqut.
Screen Time
Salah Lock uses Apple's Screen Time frameworks (Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity), with authorisation for your own device only. When you set it up, iOS asks whether you allow Mawqut to use Screen Time. You can say no; the rest of Mawqut works without it.
When you choose apps to lock, Apple gives Mawqut opaque tokens, not app names, website addresses or usage. Mawqut can ask iOS to shield and unshield those tokens at prayer times, and to show its prayer screen over them. It cannot see which apps they are, how long you use them, or anything you do inside them. That information stays inside Apple's Screen Time system on your iPhone.
Mawqut stores the tokens and its lock schedule in the App Group so its Screen Time extensions can apply the shield at each prayer. The extensions run on your iPhone only, and write nothing anywhere else. No Screen Time data leaves your device.
You can switch Salah Lock off in the app, remove Mawqut's Screen Time access in Settings › Screen Time, or delete Mawqut, at any time.
Notifications (local only)
If you turn them on, Mawqut schedules notifications on your iPhone: the adhan for each prayer you choose, an optional reminder before the adhan, a reminder to keep your streak, Ramadan suhoor and iftar reminders, and challenge reminders. When you tap “Open Mawqut” on a Salah Lock shield, Mawqut posts a local notification so you can jump straight into the app to log your prayer.
These are local notifications. They are created and delivered by your iPhone itself, from the prayer times calculated on it. Mawqut does not use push notifications, has no server that could send them, and never sends marketing notifications. “Adhan breaks through Focus” is off unless you turn it on. You can change all of this in the app or in Settings › Notifications › Mawqut, and Salah Lock still works if notifications are off.
Widgets, Live Activity and extensions
Mawqut includes Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, an iftar Live Activity in Ramadan, and three Screen Time extensions. All of them are part of the app, run on your iPhone, and read from the same App Group, group.com.elaq.mawqut, which holds the next few days of prayer times, the ayah of the day and your streak. The “Log prayer” button on a widget updates your log in the App Group. The iftar Live Activity starts only on Ramadan days you opt into, and is updated on your iPhone, not by a server. Nothing from a widget, Live Activity or extension is sent off the device.
Photos and sharing
If you save an ayah wallpaper or share card to your photo library, Mawqut asks for add-only access and saves that one image. Add-only access cannot read, browse or change your existing photos. If you never save an image, Mawqut never asks. You can change this in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos.
Sharing uses the standard iOS share sheet; you choose where it goes, and Mawqut does not see what happens after that.
Purchases
Mawqut+ is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment and tells the app, on your iPhone, whether you have an active subscription or lifetime purchase. We never receive your name, email, payment details or Apple Account information. Apple's handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's own privacy policy.
Restore Purchases asks Apple, not us, which purchases belong to your Apple Account. Mawqut remembers your last known entitlement on the device so widgets and the lock keep working offline.
No analytics, ads or tracking
Mawqut shows no ads. It contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDK, does not read the advertising identifier, and never shows the “Allow tracking” prompt, because nothing about you is tracked across apps or websites. We do not collect usage statistics, device identifiers or fingerprints, and we do not sell or share any data, because we have none.
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymous statistics and crash reports through App Store Connect. That is Apple's system and your choice; you can change it in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
This website
mawqut.app uses no cookies, no analytics, no local storage and no third-party scripts or fonts. It is hosted on GitHub Pages; like any web host, GitHub may process technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and secure the site, under GitHub's own privacy statement. We do not receive or use that data.
Children
Mawqut is intended for a 4+ age rating and is suitable for all ages. Because Mawqut collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children. Screen Time permission on a child's device is controlled by iOS and, where Family Sharing is set up, by the parent or guardian. Purchases follow the Apple Account's family settings, including Ask to Buy.
Your rights
Data protection laws such as the EU and UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) and similar laws elsewhere give you rights to access, correct, delete, port or restrict personal data, and to object to its processing. You also have the right not to have your personal information sold or shared.
Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to give you, correct or delete on our side, and nothing we could sell or share. The data Mawqut uses is on your iPhone and fully under your control: you can see it in the app and erase it by deleting the app.
If you email us, we will see your email address and message and use them only to reply. Ask us to delete the conversation and we will.
If you have a concern about how your data is handled, contact us at hello@mawqut.app. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If a change would ever mean Mawqut starts collecting data, we will say so clearly in the app before it happens.
